"The Names of God"
How well do you know God?
Most people might say that no matter how well they know God, they would like to know Him better. If you want to get to know God better, than learn His names as revealed in Scripture.
A name in the Bible is very important; it reveals something about the person’s true inner character. That is why many times in the Bible, God or Jesus renamed people by giving them a name that truly reflects their character. “Abraam” was renamed to be “Abraham” = father of many nations; “Jacob” was renamed “Israel” = “He strives with God (and prevails)” (Gen. 32:28; 35:10). Jesus renamed Simon as “Peter” – the Rock.
God has names too; in fact, in the Bible you will find 211 different names for God! It matters to God that you know Him by His names:
“Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. (Psalms 91:14)
Learn these names of God by looking them up in the Bible, meditating on them, and getting to know God better. You will get to know Him better, and your prayer life will be improved:
Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. – Jesus (John 16:24)
Here’s some great names of God, and the verses that use them in the original language:
1. Elohim = “God”
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)
Elohim means “omnipotent power and dominion over the whole universe”.
2. Jehovah = “I Am”
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:14)
This refers to God’s eternal nature. God endures forever, and has always existed, and has never not existed. He is, and was, and always will be. He will be there for you.
3. Adonai = “Lord”
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8)
The name Adonai appears 412 times in the Old Testament. This name refers to His ownership and Lordship over all of creation. It is a statement of His majesty over all creation. When you praise and thank the Lord for the beauty of creation, think of Adonai.
4. El Shaddai = “God Almighty”
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless. (Genesis 17:1)
El Shaddai refers to God’s all sufficiency and mighty power to accomplish all which He promises. God has all the power you need.
5. Jehovah – Rapha = “The Lord who heals”
He said, “If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His eyes, if you pay attention to His commands and keep all His decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.” (Exodus 15:26)
If you are sick you need to know this aspect of God’s character, and call upon Him for healing. God has the power to heal you. It is in His name and part of His character.
6. Jehovah – Jirah = “The Lord who provides”
So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.” (Genesis 22:14)
This is a reminder of God who provided the ram to be sacrificed in place of Isaac. God provides for us what we need, when we need it. If you are in need, do not forget to pray to Jehovah-Jirah, for the Lord will provide for your needs.
7. Emmanuel = “God with us”
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)
Many are familiar with this famous verse often mentioned at Christmas. It is a reminder that no matter where we are, God loves us and is with us.
8. Jesus (Jeshua) = Jehovah is salvation
Jesus is, of course, the Name above all Names!
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
This passage doesn’t actually use the name of Jesus, but it refers to His name which is the source of salvation for all who call on the name of the Lord.
And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ (Acts 2:21)
So here are eight great reminders of various character traits of the Lord God Almighty, the one we worship and serve.
